the jail out of their hands, they threatened to complain of the same to the Mayor if they persisted in this treatment to prisoners.

Mr Joseph Mayo Mayor of the city of Richmond in one of his visits to the jail was informed by the prisoners the treatment offered them without cause, and petitioned him to try and remedy the evil.  The reply of the Mayor was "you all deserve it".  I am informed that said John Brooks is in the habit of entering the cell where several female prisoners are confined, at a late hour of the night, and having criminal connections with Becky Chandler, Josephine Fletcher and Mary Shay, white, and other common women of the Town.

Said F. Hall, paid particular attention to Mrs Isabella Ould (white) who was arrested the confined in jail charged with shooting with intent to kill.

It was noticed that Mrs Ould on receive a note from Mr F. Hall in the evenings, that she would wash, powder and cologne her person, put on clean underclothes
