Statement of Mrs. M.E. Jeter (white)
- Residing on South Side Broad St and Central Rail Road -

In the month of February 1866 I was residing on 3rd. St near the Poor House and was working at the trade of Dressmaking, and not needing all the House, I rented the lower portion to Two women named Sarah Montel and Bettie Cresy (white) who were recommended to me as respectable persons, and on learning their true character which was very bad, I gave them written notice to leave, a person named Brower, residing next door to me was aroused by the noise they made, and caused a Warrant to be issued for the Arrest of the occupants of the House which I rented, and I, with the above named women were taken to the Court House, and I was found guilty of keeping a "disorderly house" on the ground that I was the tenant, and therefore held responsible, and the, then, Mayor J. Saunders, ordered that I be held to Bail in the sum of $500.00 or go to Jail till the sitting of the Hustings Court; I was sent to jail, on the 5th day of March 1866 and there remained till the 15th day of June 1866 and then the Court fined me $25.00, which sum they afterwards remitted.

During the time I was in jail I have
