The deranged colored females in the jail were knocked down and beat by Mr. F. Hall and so maltreated that they would have "fits" for several hours. One Jim Smithey (col'd) deranged - was covered from head to foot with live Vermin, as were also the rest of the deranged prisoners, and I have heard Jim and the others ask Mr Hall often for God's sake to let them wash themselves and their Clothes, and Mr. Hall would reply "No God d--n you, you shall stay in there till you rot and die, you have no business getting crazy" and if they would continue asking, they would get beat and knocked down by said F. One George Smith (white) said to have formerly belonged the the 20th N.Y.S.M. who was deranged and [[strikeout]] who was [[/strikeout]] confined in the City Jail, was struck by Mr Hall severely in the stomach with his fist and also on the temple, the last blow knocked him down, when he (Smith) cried out O Lord!
