prisoners that they would complain of.
The food of the jail consists of Peas with bugs in, Irish Potatoes that were green, and Corn meal roasted for Coffee, and spoiled fresh meat, the Corn Bread was the only thing good, such food would often cause Dysentery to spread among the prisoners and make them very sick, and it is my opinion that the food for one person does not cost 25 cents per day.
I have seen Mr F. Hall beat nearly every day one George Smith said to have been a member of the 20th N.Y.S.M. for two consecutive months, and on the morning of the day he died. Mr Hall kicked him in the stomach severely and struck him about the head with his fist knocking him down and then I ran off and did not look any more, and and that afternoon he was found dead; said Smith was covered with live Vermin and human filth, perfectly nude and was buried in this state. I have often heard Smith ask Mr F. Hall to allow him to wash himself, but he was never allowed to.
