Bureau R F and A Lands
Office of Asst Supt 3d Dist
Richmond Va 16 Nov /66

Respectfully returned to Capt James A Bates Supt 3d Dist Va with the in information, that upon an interview with Johnson, I find from his statement, there are only two witnesses who can prove his innocence, viz. Andrew Jackson, and Carter Robison, (both cold), the former is at present in Washington D.C. and the latter cannot be found. From his statement respecting his arrest and conviction, it appears he has been unjustly dealt with, not only in his arrest but upon the Ex parte testimony upon which he was tried the 19 Octo and sentenced to be confined in the City Jail for 10 days and to pay a fine of $10 and costs.
Benj. C. Cook
