Nelson & Amherst Counties Va
Lovingston Decr 3d 1866

Bvt. Brig. Genl. O Brown
A.A. Genl. Deptmt Potomac,

General:
On the 20th of last Jany, the Freedmens Court gave Geo. Washington, (Cold) a judgement for $21 against Jas Brent a Citizen of this County. Brent said nothing at the time, but when Geo. went for pay, he refused. I wrote Brent a note, he then agreed to let Geo. have produce at the market price. He gave Geo. a pair of Jeans pants for which he asked $4. Geo took them to a member of the Freedmen's Court - who told him to return the pants to Brent, & ask for his money, that the pants were not worth over $3 - Geo kept the pants. In the spring the old man came to me again & said Brent was still owing him, & he could not get the balance due. I saw Brent & he pledged me that Geo should be satisfied & the matter should not trouble me more. Recently the old man Geo, came to me & said Brent had not settled. I saw Brent last Court & his account stands thus, viz
Cash paid Geo (correct) $6-
Produce at Market price (c) 9
Pants before mentioned 6
Thus closing the acct, by charging $6 for the pants he only asked $4, for in the winter, & which the Citizen's representative of the Freedmens Court told Geo. was too much.
