For almost twelve months in the year 1862 & 1863 this county was occupied by probably the largest Army [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] (Genls. Burnside & Hooker Army) that the Government at one point ever brought into the field, & the consequence is that no section has been more completely wasted than this County resulting in almost the entire loss & destruction of the stock & laboring animals of its citizens. Upon the march of the Armies of Genls. Grant & Sherman they left a number of horses & mules with the citizens which were in a disabled & then comparatively useless condition for army purposes. They have been taken care of & recruited & through their assistance the farmers have been enabled to make their present crops.
