would make no proposition: was anxious to have the Farm restored, but would take no step which would bar him from claiming full damage. That he considered the shanties upon the farm as of no value and had rather have them removed than to have them left, That such numbers of the freedmen as he required to work the farm, he would let remain, the others he should expect the Bureau would remove. That he had no claim upon the wood or felled timber, as he should claim damage sufficient to cover it all. -

- In answer to the charge that Mr. C. E. Johnston has cut lumber on the farm, I would say that Capt. Flagg, during his administration, sold to Mr C. E. Johnston three unserviceable lighters (lying upon the beach, on the Farm.) with the agreement that he should have the privilege of repairing them where they lay. To enable me to procure transportation from the Farm as directed in letter of July 23d ult. I arranged with Mr. Johnston
