Feb. 26/97.

To the
Honorable [[?]] [[?]],
United States Senate,
Washington, D.C.

Sir:

Having been informed that the Hon. William G. Thompson is a candidate for the office of Collector of this Port, I beg the privilege of saying to you that in my opinion, under existing circumstances, he is the one man of the entire district especially qualified for this important post.

As [[alderman or chairman]], President of the Council, Mayor of our city, and in many other arduous and difficult party duties, he displayed talents and fitness of the higher order. As a solider of the Army of the Potomac he showed through three years' service that high courage and true patriotism which have endeared him to the G. A. R. and Loyal Legion. As State Senator and as active manager of very valuable and intricate business interests he commands the respect and admiration of all who [[know]] him.

The varied and important interests connected with the office which Mr. Thompson seeks -- and his many friends hope he will receive -- will, if entrusted to his administration, receive the full benefit of his experience, ability, and energy. I hope his candidacy will meet with your approval.

Very respectfully,
Charles L. Freer
