Mr. Wallace Shillito,
38-41 Thomas St.,
New York.

Dear Sir:

In reply to your inquiry of 18th inst. I am very pleased to say that David McCraw gave me most excellent service as butler and left my employ to go to England for his summer vacation. As you say, recommendations as a general rule in the east are none too reliable. I however engaged McCraw on the recommendation of my friend, Mr. Hugh McMillan of this city, who had him at Bar Harbor for a season and has said to me during that time he found McCraw a very useful man. I do not think he is given to the use of beer but I know that he occasionally takes a drink of whiskey, but I have never known him to show the slightest influence thereof. He is somewhat lame, but his lameness does not seem to interfere at all with his work. He is absolutely honest, very willing, and fairly good tempered. I say fairly good tempered because I think he has just temper enough to make him respect his position and properly influence his fellow servants. I believe he is unmarried, but on this score I am without positive facts. I must add that I have never known a servant to be more regular in his hours or to apparently care less for evenings for himself.

Yours truly,

Charles L. Freer
