March 8, 1897.

To the
Honorable James McMillan,
United States Senate,
Washington, D.C.

Sir:

At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the State Savings Bank, held to-day, it was unanimously resolved:

The the said Board do endorse the candidacy of the Honorable William G. Thompson for the position of Collector of the Port of Detroit.

And it was further resolved:

That the Vice President of said bank should convey the information of this action to you.

In so doing, permit me to add the statement that the members of said Board have a long acquaintance with Senator Thompson and have formed a high estimate of his ability, integrity, and general fitness to discharge the duties of this office. They believe that his appointment would give greater satisfaction to the Republicans of Michigan than that of any other man, and would furnish well-grounded confidence to all that the public duties of the office would be well and satisfactorily fulfilled, and the interests of the Republican party carefully safe-guarded.

Respectfully,
M J Smith
Vice President.
