April 22/98

My dear Mr. Smith:

Your letter of April 15 concerning the son of our mutual friend, Mr. Sample, would had earlier reply but for my illness. I have been confined to my house for several days, and this is the first opportunity I have had to write you.

I will take pleasure in writing Gen. Algar as requested and will ask Col. Hecker to do the same. Will you kindly convey my best wishes to Mr. Sample, and oblige.

Yours very truly,
Charles L Freer
