April 26/98.

My dear Mr. Smith:
I return herewith Mr. Sample's letter to you of 13th inst., also the copy of his letter to Senator Walcott, and am pleased to advise you that Col. Hecker and I have each written a letter to Gen. Alger soliciting his kindly interest in young Mr. Sample. Of course we cannot judge of the result but are confident that Gen. Alger will do all that he can with the President on behalf of our friend's son.

Yours very truly,
Charles L Freer
