Mr. Syl T. Smith,
Hyde PArk Hotel, Chicago, Ill.

My dear Mr. Smith:

I inclose herewith a letter from Gen. Alger concerning the desired appointment of Nathan W. Sample, Jr., as a cadet to West Point. Will you please note what the General says and let me know whether or not Mr. Sample desires me to request Gen Alger to speak with the president concerning a later appointment of the young man? I would have sent you this letter earlier but for absence from home and illness.

Mr. McBride has told me of his interview with you on Saturday last and of your having favored him with order for the 50 ore cars. Col. Hecker and I both appreciate your goodness in this matter.

Sincerely yours,
Charles L. Freer
