Sept. 30/98.

Mr. H. Shugio,
C/o Mr. E Ogawa, in Higashicho, Shinbashi, Tokyo, Japan.

My dear Shugio:

Our mutual friend Morse of Stanton has sent me a sample copy of the Japanese "Art Folio" of which you are Editor, and I am to-day sending Mr. Ogawa three subscriptions, hoping after the receipt of the first numbers to get additional subscribers for you. The "Folio" promises to be fine, and I am sure with your discriminating judgement only the best subjects will be chosen, and with facilities your country affords the reproductions should be the best of the kind you produced. I am delighted with your connection with this magazine and have no doubt that it will prove both pleasant and profitable.

How are you these days? It seems a long time since I have seen you. Is your residence in Tokyo or Kioto? I have always felt that you belonged to Kioto, but it may be you find it more convenient to live elsewhere. I have often fancied you nestled near on one of those pleasant hillsides near Sinkakugi.

Mansfield is now en route to Japan and you will probably see him ere this letter arrives. I wish that it were possible for me also to be in Japan this fall, but business prevented. Another year however I hope to renew my acquaintance with the Far East.

With sincerest regards and best wishes, I remain.
Sincerely yours,
Charles L Freer
