Mr. Syl T. Smith,
Care Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad,
Denver, Colorado,

My dear Mr. Smith:-

Earlier reply to your letter of the 5th instant has been prevented by my absence.

At the time I made an application to Secretary Alger, which was in April of last year, he stated to me that appointments for this year and last year had already been promised, so you will see there is no change for the young man this year. I hope to set the Secretary within the next sixty days and when I do I will speak to him about the matter and learn further particulars. If you think it would be wiser to write him I am entirely willing to do so, but you fully understand the number of letters he receives concerning appointments and how much better it is to be face to face with a man in questions of this sort.

Let me hear from you and I will do as you think best

With personal regards, I am,

Yours very truly,
Charles L. Freer
