April 29th,1899.

Mr. J.W. Curtiss,
Sheffield, Mass.

My dear Sir:-

Yours of 25th instant is received and noted.

Replying to your suggestion concerningthe [[concerning the]] settlement of Mr. Shaw's account, I would say that I made no arrangement with him concerning the balance due him under the old contract, but have requested him to finish his work in accordance with the understanding had with you and after having done so to send his account to me for payment. I have also entered into a new agreement with him to build a retaining wall at the edge of the new house to protect the bank, as discussed with you last year.

You need to have no alarm about any personal responsibility for having signed Mr. Wilson's name as agent to the Shaw Contract. I believe that Mr. Shaw is an honest man and that he will complete his work as originally contemplated.

As regards your own personal association with further work at the Wilson Farm. There remains so little to be done, and as it is my intention to carry on no further improvements beyond the wall above mentioned, it seemed to me quite unnecessary to assume the expense of your services in connection therewithin.

Now as regards discussing with you matters which occurred between Mr. Wilson and yourself. I would have been glad to have talked with you at any time possible concerning them. I gave you an opportunity a few weeks ago to meet me at the farm, but this you declined and came to the station the following morning just prior to train time, when there was very little opportunity to go into any details. Furthermore, you were in New York recently and did not even advise me of your presence.
