Mr. John W. Beatty,
Director, Carnegie Art Galleries,
Pittsburgh, Pa.

My dear Sir:-

Replying to your letter of the 30th ultime. The painting by Mr. Dewing will be sent in time to reach you for your forthcoming exhibition.

Now, regarding the Whistlers. I brought home with me recently from London, two very important examples of Mr. Whistler's work but I agreed with the artist not to loan one of these pictures, particularly, until after it has been shown in New York at an exhibition which is now being quietly arranged for. The second one I did not directly promise him not to show, but I feel I should hold it subject to his wishes. By this I mean to say, that while I should greatly like to accommodate you I fear that if I should send you either of these pictures, it might lead to a misunderstanding between myself and Mr. Whistler, which you know I would very much deplore. For next year you may count on having the first choice for both of these pictures.

With kind regards, Iam,

Yours very truly,
Charles L. Freer
