Detroit, Mich.,
October 13th, 1839.

Mr. Allan Bourn,
P.A., N.Y.C & H.R.R.R.,
New York City.

My dear Mr. Bourne:
I am somewhat uncertain as to whether or not you remember Mr. William F. Jarvis of this city, an old friend of mine, who is in New York at present engaged in making tests of an electrical invention, which promises to be of great value in the operation of railroads. The testing is now being conducted at Columbia College, but it is Mr. Jarvis intention to remove his place of operation to some building down town near Trininty Church, in order that a few gentlemen may have a convenient place to privately witness these demonstrations.

I have taken the liberty of asking Mr. Jarvis to call upon you to invite you to visit his place when established and show you what he has.

If it should prove that you have not previously met Mr. Jarvis, I can assure you that will find him a very pleasant gentleman, and I am equally certain that you will not regret having given a few moments of your valuable time to examining the apparatus named.

Your very truly,
Charles L. Freer
