Hot Springs, Va., Oct. 21st, 1899.
Mr. W.H. Chapin,
Care Steamer Priscilla, Pier 19 North River, New York City.
Dear Sir:-
Your letter of October 15th reached me here yesterday. I have determined to defer engaging a superintendent for my Berkshire place until after I have become more familiar with the farm, and have had greater opportunity to decide as to my future plans. It is very doubtful if I will select a man until next Spring. I intend to keep Golfer on the place during the winter, and have no doubt he will get along all right until that time. He understands that he is to be superseded by some employment there if he desires it. I will, as requested by you, when next in New York drop you a line and ask you to meet me with a view of discussing matters.
Yours very truly,
