December 20, 1898.

Hon. W. C. Maybury, Chairman,
Detroit, Mich.

My dear Sir:-

Absence from home has prevented earlier acknowledgement of your kind communication of the 9th instant, informing me of my appointment to a committee of two hundred citizens to act in connection with the proposed celebration of the Bi-Centenary of Detroit, to occur in 1901. I appreciate the honor conveyed, but regret exceedingly my inability to serve on the committee. I am in full sympathy with the proposed celebration, but my time is too fully occupied to give the committee any personal assistance whatever, and, as I do not care to be a dead man in the boat, I would much prefer that you would appoint someone in my place.

Yours respectfully,
Charles L Freer
