have sold the picture immediately after the sale at a considerable advance, to say nothing of my own inclinations towards ownership, but I wanted you to have it, as I know you will like it, and it will harmonize so perfectly with the Dewing and Tryon which are to follow. Again, it is, I think, a most important beginning for you to make in gathering a little group of works by the American masters, which you contemplate doing.

The others Fuller in exhibition, an upright figure scene, of the same size, entitled, "Lorette", and, I think, much inferior in quality, fetched $3,600,00.

On Abott H. Thayer, #90, "Young Woman" I bid up to $9,000.00 for you, after a short competition with Mr. Hern who I was sure would have gone much higher than I felt inclined to do.

I also bid on the Homer D. Martin #89 "Westchester Hills", as I felt safe in doing. It finally sold for $4,750.00.

The only thoroughly good Inness in the collection #177. "Georgie Pines" fetched $5,900.00. My limit for you on this picture was $3,500.00. I know of a fine one in New York which can be bought for much less, and while it is different in sentiment, I cannot feel that I should have none higher than I did.
