elevators and a look-out at the top, together with a great light to be used at night: this to be erected at the lower end of the Island Park; the column to rise from the water and to be surrounded by appropriate sculpture; and a great, white marble colonnade to extend entirely across the Island. It provides for both large and small best landings, and has in connection a splendid canal running inland behind the column, containing fountains, marble shore platforms, places for figures of the early French voyagers, etc., etc.
In order that the whole scheme may be perfectly understood, Mr. White is having a large colored cartoon made which will give a fine idea of what he contemplates, and he is willing to bring the cartoon to Detroit and to explain verbally his plans to whatever number of gentlemen it may be best to invite to the meeting.

In discussing the matter with Mayor Maybury and one or two others, the thought occurred to us that if you are coming to Detroit to attend the dinner to be given on the 22nd inst., it would be wise to call a meeting of the gentlemen who were at your house on the evening of November 23rd.; the meeting to be held, let us say on February 21st., and if the plan proves acceptable to the committee, exhibit the same at the Detroit Museum on the following day, hold an adjourned meeting of the gentlemen interested and invite also to the adjourned meeting such men as are likely to contribute to the cost of erecting the memorial. It will be a considerable undertaking to secure the necessary means and it seems to me that much depends upon making the right start. How does this programme strike you,
