Col. O. Brown.

Dear Sir,

Mr. J. Sinclair will hand you a petition from Mr. W.S. Jones & Mrs. E. Jones for back rent &c, which had accrued and would have been in our hands but for a little bit of sharp practice in buying up the crops of the tenants, promising to pay them cash when called for, but when called for, they put them off from time to time on the ground that they were going to keep it back for their share of the rent. Now to you they plead poverty though they are considered among the wealthiest families in the county and refuse to rent or sell house lots in Hampton short of double or thribble their actual value as compared with others equally well situated. I proposed to settle with him in accordance with your endorsement Nov 3d.

Yours very truly
C.B. Wilder
Capt. & A.Q.M.
