Dear Sir
Your letter is just received. I have for some time had under consideration the matter of Florida settlements. I am somewhat acquainted with that state having formerly been stationed there.

There is some sand and scrub-oak that the Aggricultural report would seem to imply - yet much good land can be had. I do not think the President can reserve any considerable portion of public lands against preemption claims. I shall ask Congress to do so if I fail with the President. I will aid in making settlements according to the homestead law as far as is in my power. I can now transport dependents, but there are not sufficient funds to warrant the purchase of
