Greenwood Depot, Va Decr 29th 1865

Col. O. B Brown Commr of Freedmen's Bureau for Va

Sir.
There is in my employ a girl named Emma Jane Vaughan, about 16 years of age, who has no nearer relation in this state than grandmother, uncles & aunts all of whom reside in Richmond. Her mother lives in Lincoln County Tennessee with a man named Gideon Lay - residing within 1 mile of Fayetteville.

By Emma's desire I communicated with her mother (Maria) some months ago - she having not heard from her for over 4 years, Maria wishes to have her daughter with her & said she had money to send for her & wants to do so - but couldn't send it safely: desired us to send her if Emma has money or if we could spare it: neither of which was the case-. On being written to again & informed that she could send money by means of a P.O. money order, she has not replied & I think it probable cannot raise the necessary sum-. I am very anxious to get Emma safely to the care of her mother: she wishes to go & has done so - ever since the close of the war- but for a long time could not communicate with her to find out whether she were alive-: the girl could not go by herself (never having travelled any distance alone)
