Seaton Brown states that in the Spring of 1865, he hired of Mr. R. Churchill Ass't Sup't at Yorktown, Va. thirteen (13) acres of land, agreeing to give one barrel of corn per acre for the land that produced 5 bbls per acre, and pro rata for the balance - that the land averaged not more than 4 bbls. per acre & that Churchill took 13 bbls shelled corn for rent - has receipt signed "Joseph Barclay" for 18 bbls. corn for rations, though he (Brown) rec'd no rations.

Respectfully returned with information that the records of this office show that the within named man rented 13. acres of land in the spring of 1865, was to pay 1 bbl of corn to the acre without reference to the amount the land might produce (which is paid) and 1/8 of the Fodder. He drew
390 Rations during the year 1864 at 17½ cts = $67.75
Paid 18 tubs = 6 Bbls corn = 22.50/
45.25
He also owes a balance on horse rent  5-/
Due  $50.25

The parties signing the within receipts and also the within named are not now residing in the county and I have been unable to see them personally.
