Seaton Brown states that in the Spring of 1865, he hired of Mr. R. Churchill, Ass't Sup't at Yorktown, Va. thirteen (13) acres of land, agreeing to give one barrel of corn per acre for the land that produced 5 bbls per acre, and pro rata for the balance - that the land averaged not more than 4 bbls. per acre & that Churchill took 13 bbls shelled corn for rent - has receipt signed "Joseph Barclay" for 18 bbls. corn for rations, though he (Brown) rec'd no rations.
