Seaton Brown - States that in the spring of 1865 he hired of Mr. R. Churchill, Asst. Supt. Bureau R.F. and A.L. of Yorktown Va. 13 acres of land, agreeing to give one (1) Barrel of Corn per acre for all of the land that produced at the rate of five (5) Barrels per acre, and in proportion for lands not producing as much.

States that the land averaged not more than four (4) bbls. per acre, and that Churchill took from him 13 bbls. of shelled corn, for rent. He also has a receipt, signed "Joseph Barclay, in charge," for 18 flour bbls. of corn in the cob. "on a/c of Rations," though Brown states that he received no rations from the Government in any form
