EB. 92. A S. O. Fo 98
Office Asst Supt. 9th Disct. Va
Yorktown, Va. March 28th 1866
File
Respectfully returned - Attention invited to the inclosed statement of receipts and expenditures of the "Gov't Farm" which would have been made out and forwarded long ere this were it not for the deplorable condition of the books containing the accounts of said "Farm". All the products from the same have been expended or disposed of excepting about 500 bushels of broom corn seed. As will be seen by the enclosed statement the "Farm" was through some mismanagement a loseing transaction to the Bureau. The object, as I am informed in establishing this "farm" was not so much to retain a fund, as to give employment to "Freedmen' who were out of employment, and were only able to perform light duty, the Farm far from being damaged while so

cultivated was greatly improved, finely tilled, manured &c and could not but result advantageously to the owner, who had abandoned the same and sought protection within the lines of the enemies of the government. Attention also invited to the statement in regard to the Rents received from "Freedmen", which have all been turned into available funds, accounted for, and are entirely out of the deposition of this office.
