Colonel,
I am directed to ask your attention to the following specific complaints against Capt Barnes Agent at Petersburg, and to request you to send a Detective to ascertain in some effectual manner, whether there are grounds for them. This information is from seemingly reliable sources.

"1st  That said Barnes loaned $8000. Govt. Funds at 3 per cent per month.

2d  That he is known to have received $45. for which he rendered no account to the Government.

3d  Sold large quantities of Govt. lumber worth $75. per thousand feet, at $25. per M.

4th  That he keeps five private horses"
