Sir,
I have the honor to submit the following statement for instructions as to what action I shall take. 

Lieut J. S. H. Hall Asst Supt. tried a case on the 7th inst. the parties to which reside in this town Viz: Caroline Douglas, freedwoman vs. John Scanlin, for wages due - the defendant after personal notification by the Lieutenant of the time of trial failed to appear - the Lieutenant decided that Scanlin should pay to the said Douglas thirty-five (35) dollars and referred the case to me for collection.

Scanlin complained that he did not understand the day of trial to be the 7th inst but thought it was the 14th inst. In answer
