General,

The papers in the case of Sergt. Quarles 1st U.S.C.C. who claimed $500.00 upon a Check Book purchased from Francis Manning of the same Regt. were returned from the Paymaster General to the 2nd Auditor for settlement on the 21st of June and lost in transit in between those offices. It is necessary to obtain a new bond of indemnity to the United States similar to that previously filed. William Quarles, the previous bondsman, can be found by inquiring of Dr. Robert Cabett, in Franklin St. Richmond, near the office of Capt. McDormett. As this case is one of particular hardship, I respectfully request, that special care may be taken to obtain the new bond and transmit it to this office with as little delay as possible.
