Capt. William P. Austin
Supt. of Freedmen
1st Div. Va

Sir
I have nothing to say in reference to George Washington - further than I have said in regard to Godwin - both come to me for permission to get some clothing I gave them a small piece of paper written in pencil or ink for a guide to Mr. Seldenor ("good for 50$") he returned I asked him if the amount was correct he said it was I then took his Signature or mark - as in other cases - As to charging him 20$ I do not recollect stating the amt. but in no case have I ever charged over 10 per-cent - before the passage of the of the law by Congress - only 10$ for any claim since of whatever amount besides notarial fees - in some cases of small amount I have charged only notarial fees There seems to be a determination by some parties to prove accusation against me all in Spirit and fact untrue

I have the honor to be
Very Respectfully
