Dublin, November 2d 1866
To the freedmans Bureau at Richmond.

Respectfully submitted:
Mr C.S. Schaeffer, 1st Lt USa & Asst Supt 8th Dist. Va at Christiansburg caused me to come and see him about my petition, made some time ago to the Bureau at Richmond for the recovery of my child Jane, and which can be found on Broad Str or rather at Shreamersville.= The above named gentleman also wrote to me [[strikethrough]] also [[/strikethrough]] - and told me every time, that I had to go myself to Richmond if I wanted my child. Now, I am a poor black Woman, have three little children here and am therefore "unable" to go down to Richmond.- I think that I have the right as a Mother to demand that my daughter "Jane" comes home, and that it is her duty to go. I do not want her to stay in Richmond. As to transportation to Dublin, I would humbly ask the Bureau to defray the expenses as I am too poor to send the money.- If there is money allowed for that purpose by the government, and if it is right and proper - I beg you to do me the same favor as you may do to others.-

Mr Schuman, cor of Broad & 7th Str can tell where Jane is to be found. Mr Dunlap in Dublin will receive her for me as Mr Schaeffer knows.-

Please to be kind enough to return the daughter to the Mother as I am too poor and not much acquainted with travelling, to come down myself.- For so doing I shall feel forever thankfull

---------- Reopened for Editing 2023-09-29 10:41:25... The very first word is puzzling . . . until the town of Dublin is referred to several times in the letter - as the place she wishes to the child to be sent. So I think the first word is Dublin, with the first two letters cut off.
