"orders to leave or have their cabins torn down." That day I had secured Mr. S.G. Corte's consent to let those who should pay remain on his farm, while the owner of Slabtown, Dr Powers, is only too anxious to rent his land to Freedmen, although his rents are considered very high i.e., $33.00 per year for each half acre lot. The Freedmen near Yorktown are afflicted with rash advisors, who divert them from present duty, the result of which is, that while reposing in their unanswerable arguments they forget their arguments, lose offered privileges, are brought before the court and compelled to pay their dues or more elsewhere, at which they complain bitterly to whoever is ready to listen. I apprehend much difficulty in bringing the Freedmen of Yorktown to do their duty, and this is written to prepare the Asst Commr. to expect trouble from that quarter, and to show how it arises.
