Hampton Va. April 6th 1867 I certify that I have been attending professionally, Lieut M.S. Reed for some months past. He has been suffering from a deep seated abscess in the gluteal region of the left thigh. On March 20th I opened the abscess, which discharged a large amount of pus, which has become infiltrated through the surrounding tissues. He is considerably reduced by the continuous and copious discharge, and, I would recommend, as soon as he is able to travel without injury, that he be granted a leave of absence for, at least, thirty (30) days; to visit his home in Philadelphia; and to consult with his family Surgeon Prof. Pancost. D.L. McLaughlin M.D.
