Hampton Va, April 6th 1867

I certify that I have been attending professionally Lieut M. S. Reed for some months past. He has been suffering from a deep seated abscess in the gluteal region of the left thigh. On March 20th I opened the abscess, which discharged a large amount of pus; which has become infiltrated through the surrounding tissues.

He is considerably reduced by the continuous and copious discharge, and, I would recommend, as soon as he is able to travel without injury, that he be granted a leave of absence for, at least, thirty (30) days; to visit his house in Philadelphia; and to consult with his family Surgeon Prof. Pancost.
