F. K. Smith Agent in charge. At the time of my visit Mr. Smith had not been re-appointed and I appointed Mr. John W. Dixon as clerk and acting agent, which received the approval of the Ass't Com'r, Mr. Smith will, on the 30th inst resume the duties.

The records of this office consist of an Endorsement and memorandum Book, one of letters sent, a station book, files of orders and circulars somewhat defective, and files of letters received. The Register of Marriages is yet incomplete.

The county authorities of Matthews and Gloucester intend to take care of their own poor without respect of color. Matthews has a poor fund of $10,000 the interest of which cannot be collected owing to the "stay law". The county-clerk and Agent of the Board of Overseers told me the Board was $3,000
