induced to purchase the place and continue the work. The ground is rented for one, with the privilege of two years. The capacity of the hospital is about 175; there are now 75 patients, all neatly clad and apparently contented. As a rendezvous for those unemployed, and temporarily destitute, this hospital has done good service, having been the means of relieving suffering, and providing many with homes; this is true also of the hospital near Hampton. Prejudice still keeps many out of these homes who need their benefits, not one third of those absolutely helpless are willing to enter. The hospital is in fine order and reflects credit on Dr Baker surgeon in charge whose faithful efficient labor among freedmen I take pleasure in commending.

Justice in all cases in which freedmen are concerned is administrated by a Freedmen's Court. It is at present indispensable to the order of that section owing to the large number of cases demanding immediate settlement and the jealousy of class.
