In compliance with Circular No. 10 Hd qurs. Asst. Comr. of Va. dated March 12th 1866 I have the honor to report, that at a special term of the Circuit Court for this county held on the tenth day of June 1867 the following named Freedmen were assigned and tried for the murder of John Wotten, (white) within the limits of this county. Harrison Young, Abel Williams Samuel Trim, Charles Press and Robert Kemp. In the case of James Chapman who was assigned but not tried, a Nolle Prosequi was entered by the Attorney for the Commonwealth.
The others except Press; were after a fair and impartial trial convicted of murder in the first degree and sentenced to be hung on the 16th day of August next.
