The following statements are submitted to you for your report thereon.
Mr Yancey Sleet  Hotel keeper at Matthews Court House says 
"Just before Maj. Smith left here he had been borrowing some feed of me and he owed me a little bill for some board (he had eaten here four times) for which I suggested to him to give me some hay. He gave me a bale weighing about 177 lbs. He had gotten from me - first and last not less than 100 lbs. fodder. My whole bill against him was $6.00. I don't think he got any of his drinks on credit. There may have been a drink or two on the bill - certainly not more. I couldnt say positively that he paid for any drinks with the hay. 

"I keep a bar here next to Maj Smith's office - He drinks a little - ordinarily - never saw it in his movements or conversation. I see him as
