Agreably to your request I placed in writing this day and sent to you the charge of intoxication against Major F.K.J. mentioned in our conversation at G. on the 1" inst. That charge I stated I was prepared to support by my afft. I have since learned that you have pronounced it slanderous, & I therefore hereby have the honor to request that you will transmit my letter containing sd. charge, along with this one, to Genl Brown. BRF & AL at Richmond, & shall immy furnish such other evidence, under oath, of the truth of my statement, as will compel you, however unwillingly, to retract yr hasty assertion. 

I bear no ill will or prejudice towards Major L. quite the reverse, as I have reason to believe that he belongs to a Fraternity of which I have the honor to be a member, but from seeing what I have seen [[strikethough]] & [[/strikethrough]] hearing what I have heard, & knowing as I do the disfavor in which he is held by the large majority of those whose interests he is sent here to protect & defend, I should have been culpable not to have informed you of his conduct.
  
It is stated by those you spoke to today in the investigation of the case, that you appeared as the shield & advocate of Maj Smith and not as his Judge. At any rate it seems to me as deficient in courtesy I was not notified of the time or place when you were going to examine my witnesses. Had I been
