The "freedmans" conversation with Capt Massey as stated in the letter does not do justice to Capt Massey altogether fails to give the impression which the writer confesses he did receive.

There is a dispute between Lt Alcott and the writer as to what words passed between them: but the question of fact is sufficiently clear is that these men were not punished without trial with the concurrence or permission of Capt Massey.

The witnesses of Colstons punishment having been mostly enlisted men on duty at the Guard house. I did not feel at liberty to examine them and hence am obliged to leave this matter somewhat indefinite.

I am Captain
With great respect
Your Obgd. Servant
