Liberty near Orange Co. Ho., Va., 
March 20th, 1867

My dear Sir: 
To day I went to Orange Co Ho on private business and in less than two hours Lewis B. Williams an old man probably sixty years of age and commonwealth's Attorney for this county, and James S. Newman, a man who resides near Orange Co. Ho., without my having said one word to either of them and without any other provocation than that of [[strikethrough]] being [[/strikethrough]] my having been a firm and unbending loyalist to the Government of the U.S. during the hour of [[strikethrough]] war [[/strikethrough]] trial and for my hearty approval of the passage of Mr. Steven's bill, assaulted me with a large pocket knife and four pound weight and would have murdered me if I had not concealed myself. 

Altho' a native Virginia invalid I have never let die that love for my country which warms the breast of all good citizens. I am a very poor man with a helpless wife and children depending upon my exertions for support and recently my father gave me a few acres of land near this place they say that if I do not leave here they will hang me Newman said this particularly
