You can form very little idea General Schofield - of mine, and my childrens situation! The physicians say, that my poor little child need'nt die, if I can take her to a colder and more equable climate, and have the proper food and expense for her -, but that she will not last here, through the year. What can I do? I have no money - and I cannot sell my land. I have tried everywhere to get work - but there are more offering to do work, than there is work to do. For a great part of last fall - I could get nothing for Beckie to eat, but bread and bacon - and she could not eat it. I have a little money coming to me from my mothers estate, and occasionally, as I could collect it, would buy Beckie, a fowl - or a pound of butter -  or a few dozen eggs. I also received a few dollars from St Louis - but it takes so much to get cod liver oil and whiskey for her! All the tea - coffee - sugar - that she gets, I have to buy for her. And my sisters are not able to give us as much as they do. We are utterly destitute General Schofield, will you not assist us? We need every thing! My husband has two sisters who are now in New York - and they have friends in Mankato - and Minneapolis in Minnesota, who say that we can get a school in either of these places if we can get there. But I have no money - or clothing - and we have not a man in the world to look up to! I have no
