father, husband - son - or brother. There are persons all around us who have been liberally assisted by Benevolent Societies at the North - who have husbands, and sons, and we have none. Great boxes of clothing are daily arriving for people at the Court House, who I hear, are living like prines [[princes]] compared to us. A friend of mine in St Paul - Mr Knox - sent on my behalf to General Howard; and on yesterday - a gentleman came to see me to identify me. He seemed to be satisfied with my references. Still, I do not know if he will assist me. We heard that he said that the government had horses on hand - that they would give to those who had had their horses taken. My sisters and mother had three splendid blooded horses taken after the surrender - together with quantities of all kinds of provisions - corn meal, flour, bacon -  lard - molasses - wines - brandies - in fact every think that they could carry off. General Terry had to send a Massachusetts Regiment up here to protect the people, but the could not identify the maureders. 

Will you not give my sisters some horses and provisions? Fifteen able bodied men - with their families - were set free on our plantation. You cannot think of the misery of our condition, Genl Schofield. We are in a living tomb. There is no society - no school - and sometimes it is nearly four months that we hear no sermon. The people are so utterly sunk in their own sorrows,
