Bureau R.F. & A. Lands
Office of A.S.A. Comdg
Leesburg, Va., July 8th 1867.

Respectfully returned to Capt. S.P Lee, S.A. Comr, with information, I immediately saw Randolph Barnehouse, the applicant, and informed him what action I had been directed to take in regard to the case in question.

Mr. Barnhouse, at this time was unable to adduce any evidence, on oath, but informed me, that in the course of a few days he would see what he could then do. When next I saw him — Mr Barnhouse — he informed me, that he had not up to that time been able to support his letter to me, by affidavits of any parties who were cognizant of the circumstance of his loosing his horse. I then directed him to bring to my office, with the least possible delay, any and all testimony which he could offer in establishing his case, or to give me the names of any parties who would swear to his statement, as I would attend to the matter for him; but as he has not availed himself of either opportunity, I am fully satisfied, that he can not establish, either by his own or other parties oaths, the facts which he stated in his letter to me, concerning the loss of his horse, by the Court of this County in consequence of his loyalty to the U.S. Government.

I have been waiting in this case, to see if something would not turn up by which he could establish his claim, but to no purpose.

(Signed) S.B. Smith
Bvt. Capt. & A.S.A. Comr
