My Dear Sir,

Your letter of June 13th is just to hand, and I am very much astonished at Frank Edwards.  At the evacuation of Richmond he came to my house, and agreed to stay with me the balance of the year for his clothes and rations. Last year I agreed to give him five (5) dollars per month or sixty (60) dollars a year. He lost about one third (1/3)of his time, and I paid him all to about twenty (20) dollars, which I can prove at a settlement, which I had with him at Christmas, I wanted him to give me the contract, that I might credit it, but he told me he had lost it. Then he made a contract with me for this year and remained here drawing his rations regularly every week for three or four months, and during that time I am willing to make oath he did not work but nine days. He became so trifling that I was rather relieved,
