when he left though I told him I would give him a home as long as he lived (My reason for doing so was because my family as well as myself were much attached to the old negro), and he should not suffer even now. He is a very old man nearly 70 or 75 years old, and you may judge what he was worth. I am truly sorry that uncle Frank has made such a mistake for if I had never paid him one cent I could not owe him one hundred and ten dollars. I send you enclosed the statement of the gentlemen who were present at the settlement had with the old man, and I can send you the statement of several colored persons on my farm if you wish it. The contract held by me shows a ballance due uncle Frank of twenty (20) dollars up to christmas, since then he had four (4) dollars of me and his rations some 3 or 4 months. It is proper to add that you direct your letters to the wrong post office. My Post Office is Dover [[strikethrough]] Hill [[/strikethrough]] mills, Goochland Co Va.

Yours very respty:
(signed) Richard D. Carter

P.S. I rec'd both of your letters yesterday. I have not been to Subletts before for 2 months & have replied early today. Hope the explanations are satisfactory.
